BMW 3 Series for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The BMW 3 Series is the car that defines the executive saloon class. It has been the standard against which all others are measured since the E30 generation, and for good reason: balanced rear-wheel-drive handling, a premium interior that ages better than its rivals, and residual values that reflect long-term quality. Used examples are now accessible at every price point from £5,000 upwards — and on the Isle of Wight's varied road network, a 3 Series reveals why drivers choose it over similarly-priced mainstream alternatives.

Which Generation to Buy

E90 (2005–2012): The most widely available 3 Series on the used market. Early examples are now very affordable (£3,000–£6,000), but reliability varies significantly by engine. The N47 diesel timing chain is the key concern. Well-maintained N46/N52 petrols are strong. Avoid the E90 M3 unless you have budget for its V8's running costs.

F30 (2012–2018): The modern-feeling choice with current infotainment, improved safety, and refined interiors. The B47 diesel and B48 petrol are much better than the troubled N47 and N13 units in the E90. The 320i and 320d are the volume sellers and best all-round choices.

G20 (2019–present): The current-generation 3 Series. Far fewer available used, and prices are high (£18,000+). The interior and technology are a genuine step forward. If budget allows, the G20's digital cockpit and improved ride quality are worth having.

For most island buyers, the F30 (2012–2018) offers the best balance of modern features, reliability, and value.

Which Engine?

320i / 330i (B48, 2.0 petrol, F30 post-2015 and G20): BMW's B48 four-cylinder turbopetrol is one of the best engines in the segment. Smooth, efficient, and reliable. The 320i (184bhp) is adequate for island use; the 330i (252bhp) is noticeably more satisfying. Real economy of 35–42mpg in island driving.

318i / 320i (N13/N20, F30 pre-2015): The earlier 1.5 and 2.0 petrols. The N13 is less reliable (see timing chain below); the N20 is broadly fine. Both are cheaper to buy than B48-engined cars.

320d (B47, 2.0 diesel, F30 post-2015 and G20): The most popular engine combination and the one that makes most sense for buyers who do mainland runs regularly. Real-world 50–55mpg from a 190bhp car is impressive. Check DSG fluid change history.

320d (N47, 2.0 diesel, E90 and early F30): The troubled diesel. The N47's timing chain failure is the defining reliability issue of this generation — and the chain is at the back of the engine, making replacement very expensive. Only buy an N47 with documented chain inspection and replacement history.

330d / 335d: The high-output diesels. More performance but higher running costs and more complex emissions equipment. Better for buyers who do regular motorway runs on mainland trips.

340i / M340i: Top petrol options. The M340i (374bhp) is a genuine performance car at a reasonable used price (£20,000+). Insurance and running costs reflect this.

Known Issues to Check

N47 diesel timing chain: The defining failure of E90 and early F30 320d/318d models. The chain can fail catastrophically — engine destruction in worst cases. If buying an N47-engined car, insist on documented chain replacement or budget for it. Listen for any cold-start rattle.

N13 petrol oil consumption and timing chain: The 4-cylinder 1.6 N13 (316i, 318i in early F30) shares problems with the 1 Series — timing chain stretch and oil consumption. Avoid or buy with full documented history.

EGR valve (diesels): Carbon build-up on EGR valves is common on higher-mileage diesel 3 Series. Symptoms include rough running at idle and reduced power. A clean is often sufficient; replacement is £300–£600.

Rear subframe (E90): On very high-mileage E90s, the rear subframe mounting points can develop cracks — particularly on cars that have been used hard. Check the underside at viewing.

Rust: BMW's corrosion protection is good but island salt air still warrants checking door sills, rear wheel arches, and the exhaust system.

E90 vs F30: Which Should You Buy?

E90 (2005–2012) F30 (2012–2018)
Price range £3,000–£10,000 £7,000–£18,000
Infotainment iDrive (dated) iDrive (modern)
Engine reliability Variable Better (post-2015)
Build quality Excellent Excellent
Running costs Higher (older) Lower
Parts Available Available

The F30 with a post-2015 B47 or B48 engine is the more dependable choice. The E90 can be excellent value if you know what to check.

IoW Buying Tips

BMW 3 Series supply on the island is moderate — typically 10–20 examples across price points at any time. The premium brand attracts more PCP finance than mainstream models, so HPI checks for outstanding finance are particularly important.

Servicing outside of a BMW main dealer is straightforward — independent BMW specialists (of which several operate on the mainland and can be found for scheduled services) bring costs to a reasonable level. Annual service at a specialist runs £250–£400 for a 320d.

Check MOT history at gov.uk/check-mot-history and run an HPI check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMW 3 Series reliable?

It depends heavily on the engine. The N47 diesel (in E90s and early F30s, 2005–2015) has a known timing chain issue that is the most significant reliability problem in the model range. Post-2015 F30s with the B47 diesel or B48 petrol are significantly more reliable and are the ones to target for peace of mind. The 3 Series generally rewards regular servicing more than most rivals — extended service intervals accelerate engine wear.

What is the best BMW 3 Series to buy used?

The F30 320d or 320i with post-2015 (facelift) B47 or B48 engines in SE or Sport trim is the standout recommendation. It offers a genuinely premium driving experience, modern technology, and the improved engine reliability that makes long-term ownership predictable. A 2016–2017 F30 320d with 50,000 miles and full BMW service history is an excellent used buy at around £10,000–£13,000.

Is the BMW 3 Series expensive to run on the Isle of Wight?

Running costs are higher than mainstream rivals (Golf, Focus, Octavia) but not dramatically so if you service at an independent BMW specialist rather than a main dealer. Fuel economy from the B47 320d is genuinely good at 50–55mpg on mixed island driving. Parts are more expensive than Ford or Vauxhall equivalents. Insurance groups are 30–40 for most variants — noticeably higher than mainstream alternatives.

Does the BMW 3 Series suit Isle of Wight roads?

Very well. The 3 Series' rear-wheel-drive balance and precise steering make it genuinely enjoyable on the island's coastal B-roads. The suspension is firm without being harsh — well-matched to the island's mixed surface quality. The saloon body offers 480 litres of boot space, and the estate (Touring) version 495 litres, making either practical for island life. At 4.63m for the saloon, it fits in most car parks comfortably.

Should I buy a BMW 3 Series estate or saloon?

The Touring estate (480–1,500 litres vs 480 litres for the saloon) is the choice for families needing boot space. Saloons tend to be slightly cheaper for equivalent spec. Both drive identically. On the island where practicality for beach gear, bikes, and shopping matters, the Touring is the more useful body shape for family buyers.
