Wightlink Multilink Guide: Is It Worth It for Regular Travellers?

Our resident ferry discount guide covers how to apply for Wightlink's Multilink card and the general savings involved. This guide takes a narrower angle: at what point does Multilink actually start paying for itself, and is it worth it if you're not crossing every week?

The Numbers

Multilink vehicle passes are bought in blocks of crossings: a 10-crossing pack works out to roughly £42 per crossing, and a 60-crossing pack to around £33.50 per crossing. Both rates apply year-round, avoiding the peak-pricing surcharges that standard bookings are subject to.

The Breakeven Question

Standard peak car ferry fares run considerably higher than either Multilink rate — meaning even a handful of crossings a year at peak pricing can already justify the 10-crossing pack. The 60-crossing pack requires a genuinely regular pattern of travel to make sense: if you're not confident you'll use all 60 crossings before the pack expires, the per-crossing saving is wasted on unused entitlement.

As a practical guide: a solo driver making two return crossings a month (48 crossings a year) would be well within range to use a 60-pack fully, and the saving compared to standard peak fares has been estimated at close to £1,850 a year for that travel pattern. Someone crossing only occasionally — a handful of times a year — is better served by the 10-crossing pack, or simply booking standard fares timed to avoid Saturday and peak hours.

Who Should Consider Multilink

Genuinely worth it for: islanders with a mainland job requiring regular commuting, anyone with family or property on both sides of the Solent requiring frequent trips, and tradespeople who cross for work regularly.

Marginal for: occasional visitors doing one or two crossings a year — the timing tactics in our 15 ways to save guide will usually serve better, since Multilink requires IoW residency to apply in the first place.

Don't Forget to Update Your Registered Vehicle

If you change cars while on a Multilink scheme, you need to update your registered vehicle with Wightlink — the discount doesn't transfer automatically to a new registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Wightlink Multilink actually cost per crossing?

The 10-crossing pack works out to roughly £42 per crossing; the 60-crossing pack to around £33.50 per crossing. Both are fixed year-round rates, avoiding peak-pricing surcharges.

How many crossings a year do I need to make Multilink worth it?

Even a handful of crossings a year at peak pricing can justify the 10-crossing pack. The 60-crossing pack needs a genuinely regular pattern — for example, two return trips a month — to ensure you use the full pack before it expires.

What happens if I don't use all my Multilink crossings?

Unused crossings represent wasted saving, since you've paid for the block regardless of use. If you're unsure you'll use a full 60-pack, the 10-crossing pack is the safer choice.
