Honda Civic for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Honda Civic is one of the most enduring nameplates in the car industry — in continuous production since 1972 and consistently regarded as one of the more dependable and well-engineered cars in its class. On the Isle of Wight, where cars must cope with salt air and limited service options, the Civic's reputation for reliability and straightforward ownership makes it a particularly sensible choice.

Which Generation to Choose

Eighth Generation (2005–2011) The most distinctively styled Civic of recent times — with twin-deck instrument binnacle and a cabin that felt genuinely futuristic at launch. Available with 1.4 petrol, 1.8 i-VTEC petrol, 2.0 i-VTEC petrol, and 2.2 i-CTDi diesel. The 1.8 i-VTEC is the pick — smooth, reliable, and well-suited to IoW driving. The diesel is efficient but the DPF can block on short island trips. Look for a good service history and check for rust around the rear wheel arch extensions.

Ninth Generation (2011–2017) More conventional in styling but still well built. The 1.6 i-DTEC diesel is one of the best diesel engines of its era — extremely fuel efficient and refined. However, the same DPF caveat applies for IoW use. The 1.8 petrol continues from the previous generation and remains the safer IoW choice. These are now competitively priced secondhand.

Tenth Generation (2017–2021) A significant improvement in refinement and technology. Available with 1.0 VTEC Turbo (126hp), 1.5 VTEC Turbo (182hp), and the excellent 1.6 i-DTEC diesel. The 1.0 VTEC Turbo is the most practical for IoW use — economical, capable, and avoids DPF concerns. The 1.5 Turbo is notably quick and fun. Both petrol engines suit island driving well.

Eleventh Generation (2022–present) Honda went hybrid-only with the eleventh gen — 2.0-litre petrol-electric. It's quiet, refined, and extremely efficient, particularly in the kind of gentle driving that characterises IoW motoring. These remain expensive secondhand but represent the most technically capable Civic ever made.

Why the Civic Works on the Isle of Wight

  • Exceptional reliability: Honda's VTEC petrol engines are among the most robust ever produced. Owners regularly achieve 200,000+ miles without major engine work
  • Petrol suits IoW mileage: IoW residents who drive 4,000–9,000 miles per year are much better served by petrol than diesel — no DPF complications, simpler servicing
  • Build quality: The Civic's interior and body quality hold up well over time. An older Civic often feels more solid than a newer rival from a different brand
  • Service network: Honda dealers and independent specialists can service Civics anywhere — including on the island

Common Issues to Check

  • Rust (eighth gen): The rear wheel arch extensions on eighth-gen Civics can trap water and accelerate rust. This is a known issue — inspect carefully on any IoW example, where salt air makes it worse
  • Timing chain (1.0 and 1.5 VTEC Turbo, tenth gen): Occasional timing chain rattle on cold start has been reported. Listen carefully on a cold start — any rattle should be investigated before purchase
  • Transmission mount (tenth gen): Some tenth-gen owners report a clunk from the transmission area. Usually a worn mount — inexpensive to fix but verify before purchase
  • DPF (diesel, all generations): Any diesel Civic used mainly for short IoW trips risks DPF blockage. The 1.6 i-DTEC is efficient but not immune
  • Infotainment (earlier generations): Older in-car entertainment systems have aged less gracefully than the mechanical parts. A phone holder and Bluetooth adapter are inexpensive solutions if the audio system feels dated

What to Pay on the Isle of Wight

  • Eighth gen (2005–2011): £3,500–£8,000
  • Ninth gen (2011–2017): £6,000–£12,000
  • Tenth gen (2017–2021): £11,000–£19,000
  • Eleventh gen hybrid (2022+): £23,000–£32,000

IoW examples typically have lower mileage than mainland equivalents — verify with a service history check.

Salt Air Inspection

Pay particular attention to:

  • Rear wheel arch extensions and the bodywork beneath them (eighth gen especially)
  • Sills and sill ends
  • Around the tailgate aperture
  • Underbody, particularly on older examples
